One of the most interesting messages I ever delivered came through a leaf. That’s right, a leaf! It happened last summer at an outdoor public message service at Lily Dale, the Spiritualist community in western New York. I had volunteered to give messages at Inspiration Stump, which is in a small clearing surrounded by several acres of virgin forest. About 250 people sat on wooden benches listening to the medium before me and while I was waiting for my name to be called for my turn, I glanced down. Suddenly I became slightly dizzy, as my gaze focused on a green maple leaf lying by itself on the hard-packed dirt. I couldn’t take my eyes off that leaf. What did it mean? Somehow, I heard my name. As I walked before the crowd I smiled, though on the inside I still felt a little rattled. I put the leaf out of my mind and concentrated on connecting with spirit. Who wanted to come through? I picked up a presence, and began talking. I don’t remember now what I said. All I remember is that in the back of my mind, like the last guest at a party who refuses to go home, was the feeling that the maple leaf was very important.

When you volunteer to serve at a Lily Dale message service, you’re encouraged to speak for five minutes and deliver three messages (my husband usually delivers two – he talks too much!), and I was about to go into my second when that leaf seemed to grow and wrap itself around my head. Ok, I thought to my guides, let’s go with it, and prayed that I wouldn’t sound too silly.

“I have a leaf,” I said to the sea of blank faces. “Can anyone take a leaf? Oh, it belongs to one of you guys?” I said, looking around at the trees. That got a laugh from the crowd, but I was beginning to wonder if my train of thought had jumped the tracks. A leaf!

Trust, I felt, as if someone was whispering in my ear. Go with it.

So I closed my eyes for a moment to centre myself and concentrated on the leaf. “This is a gentleman who liked being outside,” I said, looking at the crowd. I’m hearing father and husband. Have you ever heard the expression, ‘Going to the shed?’ In England, some men have little sheds in their back yards where they like to go for a little bit for some quiet time. Maybe they just go there for a cigarette, or to read the paper—”

A woman in the audience raised her hand. Beside her, two little girls were squirming and laughing.

“I think you’re describing my dad,” the woman said with a smile. “He had a little shed out in our backyard that he used to go to smoke—”

“Tell her about the leaf!” laughed one of her children.

“Yes,” the woman said. “As we were walking here, I said to my children, ‘I hope we get to hear from grandpa today.’ And just as I said that, a leaf dropped on my head.”

“And here it is!” cried one girl, holding it up.

There were a few sighs and gasps in the crowd, and then everyone had a good laugh as the girl waved her leaf like a flag. I suddenly connected very strongly with the gentleman in spirit, and told the woman, “Your father comes to you and your children with lots of love. He wants you to keep that leaf, and he hopes that every time you look at it, you think of him and remember that he’ll always be with you.”

“We’ll keep it, for sure!” one of the little girls said. Her mother smiled and wiped her eyes.

Now, who would’ve thought that one little leaf could have so much meaning for someone? Or, better yet, isn’t it amazing how spirit communicates to us? While many of us “hear” spirit through our intuition – our sixth sense – spirit can also touch in with us through the world itself. This is what I call an environmental message. Spirit use their energy to get us to notice things that have special meaning, like a book we are inexplicably drawn to (and turns out to be just the thing we need to read to help solve a problem), or a song that plays on the radio just as we are thinking about the person whose favorite song is what we’re hearing.

Here’s another example of an environmental message. My husband was driving on the freeway in the U.S. one night and he saw a big neon sign advertising a SUNOCO gasoline station. All of the letters had burned out, except the middle two: NO. He laughed at that. The environmental message wasn’t for him, but he knew that someone driving that night, someone who was angry or hurt or confused, and probably facing a great decision – perhaps even a life-or-death situation – had a burning question that needed an answer. Should I leave my wife? Am I really a failure? Should I end it all?

NO.

Let’s hope, emboldened by this seemingly random message – from God’s mouth to your ears, as the saying goes – that someone realizes he or she is not alone in the Universe, and there is a greater power to call on for help.
