I recently taught a mediumship development seminar at Into the Mystik,
a bookstore and spiritual center outside Toronto. As I was tidying up
after class, I noticed a young woman out of the corner of my eye
waiting until everyone else had left the room. She had a curious yet
thoughtful look on her face. Oftentimes, a student who’s new to psychic
development will linger ‘til we’re alone, then ask in a hushed voice
something like, “Is this for real?” or “Am I going to start seeing dead
people?”
As she approached, I smiled and reached for one of those wonderful
chocolate-covered graham cracker cookies that Denise and Melinda, Into
the Mystik’s owners, provide for workshop participants. And then my
student said something that floored me.
“When you do mediumship,” she asked, “how do you know you’re really speaking to someone in spirit, and not just reading someone’s mind or picking up something in their aura?”
I was stopped for a moment, because her question was one I sometimes ask myself. And I do from time to time wonder – where does the information I give come from?
There are three possible answers to that question:
• I’m accessing a person’s Akashic Record, which is basically a storehouse of information about that person’s soul.
• I’m picking up material from my client’s etheric aura, that area around the body which contains information about a person’s energy, and stores his or her experiences, emotions, earthly and karmic relationships, possibilities, etc.
• I’m communicating with my client’s guides, angels, deceased loved ones, friends, pets and whoever else happens to stop by and say hello.
After talking with my student, I’m going with number three, and here’s why: First, I’m not an Akashic Record reader – I’m not trained in that art and, besides, to open the book of someone’s life, I’d need their permission. It would be like going to a library without my library card – the guard at the front desk would stop me and tell me to go home.
As to reading an aura: Yes, it does contain lots of useful information that I can psychically give a client. After all, a reading consists of just that – having your aura read. However, what I can pick up from an aura is limited. Think of your aura as a layer of felt cloth that surrounds you; as you move through life, all the bits that stick to your felt – your experiences and emotions – is what I see around you.
But what about when I give you information that you – and, obviously, me – can’t possibly know before we’ve met? Where does that knowledge come from? The only answer I can think of is the knowledge was given to me through your guides and loved ones who have passed into spirit.
(Though I rather enjoy the idea espoused by the ancient Greeks, who believed that pieces of news and gossip had energies of their own and could fly through the air. Hence the phrase: “A little birdie told me.”)
I remember a public message event, where I received information from a grandmother in spirit for her grown daughter about a genetic predisposition to a blood disease in the family. The woman looked at me like I was speaking Swahili but four weeks later, she emailed me saying doctors had just diagnosed a possible blood disorder in her young child.
And other times, spirit comes more simply: Like when I open my office door to greet a client and immediately feel a happiness wash over me. “Oh,” I’ll say with a smile, “I smell jasmine – your mother is here,” and my client asks, "How did you know my mother’s favorite perfume was jasmine?" And so the session begins as more personal evidence comes through before we even sit down to formally talk.
I explained this briefly to my inquisitive student, which she accepted with a contemplative nod. What I didn’t tell her was her mother was glad she was beginning to explore her spirituality.
