A former classmate of mine, a respected colleague and a well-regarded medium in the United States, has a tumour in her pituitary gland that may be inoperable. Last night, I placed her name in my healing circle and meditated on her recovery.

I believe in absent healing – also called distance healing – because we have the ability to transmit our thoughts and feelings to others. It’s the same principle as when we think about someone, and then she “picks up” those thoughts, picks up the telephone, then says she suddenly had an urge to call. During absent healing, we send our love and concern to faraway friends – and even strangers! – and hope for their recovery. Several months ago, I was part of a wondrous healing experience. It strengthened my belief in the power of absent healing, and deepened my trust in Spirit.

I was at Cober Hill, a Spiritualist centre in England, where I’d gone to hear noted English physical medium Stewart Alexander. Several hundred workshop participants were eagerly awaiting Stewart’s Friday night talk on the history of Spiritualism. Stewart has one of those animated yet regal voices that hold listeners spellbound. Even if he’d been speaking about the history of dust, I’m sure I would’ve found it fascinating.

That evening, he took the stage around 8 p.m. and looked out over the crowd. In a quiet voice, he asked us to sit a few moments in silence and ask for healing for three good friends who had taken ill. One of them was Tom Harrison, who’d been admitted to a hospital in Torrevieja, Spain, with pneumonia.

We sat quietly with bowed heads, and I asked Source to help these men I’d never met, and had no idea what they looked like.

One Saturday evening, over a typical English dinner of boiled meat, boiled potatoes and boiled vegetables, Stewart entered the dining room with a look of utter joy. He’d just heard from Tom’s wife Ann, and had an incredible story to tell.

“As he [Tom] lay on his bed, with his wife sitting beside him,” Stewart said, “he suddenly felt completely enveloped by a peaceful energy, and he quickly slipped into a deep sleep.” It was, Stewart added, the first time Tom had felt comfortable in days.

Was Tom’s recovery due to absent healing? The Spanish hospital was located about 1,500 miles from Cober Hill, and I was a tad skeptical. I later wrote Stewart about this, and received this reply from Ann Harrison.

“Tom had been confused/semi-lucid for five days when we got him into hospital and, at times wasn’t making a great deal of sense. He couldn’t always remember where he was. On Friday evening, he was sitting up out of bed when he suddenly announced, 'I have to get into bed'. He did so and lay down. I stood at the foot of the bed and sensed a wonderful energy. I said, 'I think they’re doing the healing'. I checked the time; it was about 8:10 p.m. Tom said, 'The energy is huge' and went to sleep. I stayed for about another half hour, then drove home and rang Stewart to ask if there had been any healing thoughts sent. He confirmed it would have been just about 10 past eight.

“On Saturday morning, I found Tom so much better. All the confusion had gone and did not return.”

So, I’ll place the name of my fellow psychic from the States in the blue healing temple at my Spiritualist church, The Church of Universal Love in Toronto. That receptacle is filled with the names of those who will be sent healing prayers. After all, when you practice healing, you spread hope. And when you pray for the health of others, you’re also strengthening yourself.
