PENNIES, FEATHERS AND HUGS

I once had a client who believed her husband, Jim, who had passed into spirit six months previously, had returned to Earth as a cat. Delores got this idea because several times while sitting in her backyard garden, thinking about how much she missed her partner of thirty-one years, a fluffy white cat had walked by. In fact, once the cat had stopped and looked at Delores, meowed once, then scampered off. While I do believe in reincarnation, I gently explained to Delores that I didn’t think her husband became the cat – instead, his spirit influenced the cat to pass by when she was remembering him. “It was Jim’s way of saying hi, and letting you know he’s thinking of you, too.” Then I told her some of the many ways our loved ones in spirit show us that they’re still around.

I often hear stories like Delores’ – a butterfly that alights on a headstone the moment a loved one stops by the grave to pay their respects, or a car alarm that goes off just when two people are talking about how much they miss their buddy. And how many times has this happened to you: A song comes on the radio that reminds you of someone in spirit – just as you begin thinking about that person.

I don’t know how spirit is able to set off a car alarm or influence a DJ to play a certain song at just the right time. But it happens. You may not notice it, but it happens. And I’m willing to bet it happens to you a lot more often than you think.

Just be aware of the pennies and feathers.

At a recent public message event in Vaughan, Ontario, I scanned the audience and immediately felt drawn to a woman in a white cotton blouse sitting at the end of the second row. What drew me to her were her eyes – they were the deepest blue I’d ever seen. They were so neon-blue, they almost seemed to glow. Spirit has a message for her, I thought, as I connected with her energy. That’s why they’re pointing her out to me. But as I started to speak with her, the only thing my guides showed me was a penny.

“Why is a penny so important to you?” I asked, mystified.

She shrugged.

“One penny doesn’t make a lot of sense,” I said with a smile, and everyone laughed.

Then her friend, sitting beside her, nudged her with an elbow. “Remember the penny you found outside the door?” she said. “You were saying how you hoped your mother would come through, and then you saw it on the ground.”

Suddenly, a picture formed in my mind, and I described an Italian woman with a flowery apron in a kitchen making cannolis. The woman nodded enthusiastically, saying it was her mother, whose specialty was cannolis. Then I gave more evidence and a message from her mother in spirit.

“Oh, I’m gonna keep this lucky penny,” the woman said, reaching into her pocket.

“I’m always finding change – usually pennies and dimes,” I said. “This is one way our loved ones in spirit let us know they’re around, and watching over us. They take the change that people drop, then apport (from the French language - apporter meaning to carry) it – move it with their energy – so we find it. Some people save those coins. I put them in a jar and at the end of a year; I donate the money to a charity, and don’t ask for a tax statement. That’s my way of returning the spirit money back to spirit.”

I then asked the group if they ever found feathers, or saw them float down from the sky – especially when there were no birds around. A lot of people raised their hands. That’s another way spirit contacts us,” I said.

“My mother collected the feathers she used to find,” the woman said. “She said they dropped off the wings of angels. Ooh!” she exclaimed. “I’m getting goosebumps just thinking about it!”

I smiled at the woman who talked, nodding my thanks to her for speaking up. “Does anyone else ever feel that tingle that usually runs up the back and down the arms when you’re thinking about someone who had died?” Quite a number of people were nodding. “That’s a spirit hug. Next time that happens, imagine the person holding you in their arms and giving you a loving hug.”

The rest of the event went well, as I continued to bring through evidence of life after death for many of the men and women in the audience. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to connect with everyone in this large group, and as people filed out of the room, I hoped that their loved ones would find away to touch in with them. Perhaps, if they invited them to do so, their spirit people would come into their dreams. And maybe a few would stop to bend over and pick up that penny or feather that they might have ignored and walked past before.
